Balancing motherhood and HR leadership

A Journey of Empathy and Inclusion
By Estefania Martinez, HR Manager at More Than Support

In my journey as a mother and a human resources leader at More Than Support, I’ve come to understand the deep connection between empathy, balance, and inclusion in the workplace. Becoming a mother has transformed the way I approach HR management, offering me a unique perspective that I now bring to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all employees.

The influence of motherhood on HR leadership
Motherhood has been a transformative experience for me, one that has opened my eyes to the real-life challenges employees face when balancing work and family. While empathy has always been at the core of my leadership style, being a mother has deepened my understanding of the importance of flexibility and support. At More Than Support, I am committed to fostering a culture where every individual feels appreciated not only as a professional but also as a parent. The workplace should be a community, a place where people feel seen, heard, and valued in all facets of their lives.

Creating an inclusive environment as a woman in leadership
As a woman and an emigrant in a leadership role, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the power of diverse voices in the workplace. This unique perspective drives me to ensure that every person at More Than Support feels they have a voice, no matter their background. Representation and mentorship are crucial in building an inclusive environment, and I am passionate about creating spaces where everyone’s perspectives are respected. My own journey has shown me that the richness of different cultures, experiences, and ideas can truly strengthen an organisation.

Balancing professional responsibilities with motherhood
One of the toughest challenges I’ve faced is balancing my professional responsibilities with the demands of motherhood. It’s not easy, and I won’t pretend it is, but I’ve learned to navigate this by being clear about my boundaries and priorities. Delegating tasks and having open conversations with my team about my needs have been key to finding a workable balance. The support I’ve received from my colleagues has been invaluable, reminding me that no one has to do it alone. I’ve learned that being honest with myself and others about what I can handle is essential.

Ensuring inclusivity in HR practices
At More Than Support, ensuring our HR practices are inclusive is a core priority. I am deeply committed to actively listening to the experiences of our employees, particularly those from minority backgrounds. Through regular feedback, focus groups, and one-on-one meetings, we strive to understand the unique challenges they face and address them head-on. We also provide training programs that focus on diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all employees feel respected and valued. Furthermore, our recruitment practices are designed to attract diverse candidates, which not only strengthens our team but also enriches our workplace culture.

Advice to working mothers from Hispanic backgrounds
For other working mothers, particularly those from Hispanic backgrounds, my message is simple: embrace your strength. Being a mother and a professional comes with challenges, but it also brings immense resilience. Surround yourself with a network of supportive colleagues and never hesitate to ask for help—it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. Remember, you have the power to excel in both motherhood and your career. Celebrate your journey and the impact you can make in both areas of your life.
