Finding Purpose in Support: A Journey of Compassion and Resilience

By Valeria Posada, Support Coordinator at More Than Support

Becoming a support worker wasn’t just a career decision for me, it was an act of passion and purpose. Four years ago, I embarked on this path to make a difference in the lives of those who needed it most. While the journey wasn’t always easy, the joy of seeing people happy and thriving has been my greatest reward.

The heart of care: bringing my Culture into my work

As a Colombian woman, my cultural background has deeply shaped the way I approach my role. Growing up in a community where love and family are at the core of our identity taught me the importance of empathy and connection. In my work with More Than Support, I bring this sense of warmth and familial care to every interaction with clients. My goal is always to support with passion and genuine love for what I do.

Transforming lives: the Joy of progress

One of the most rewarding moments of my career came when I began working with a client who had lost her motivation to walk and participate in activities she once loved. Together, we set small goals, celebrated every milestone, and gradually reignited her confidence. Today, she walks with the aid of a stick, attends art classes, and joyfully engages with others. Watching her rediscover her passions and independence reminded me why I chose this field, to help people thrive and reclaim their joy.

Navigating challenges: resilience in the face of adversity

As a minority in this field, I’ve faced challenges, particularly around my accent. At times, people have poked fun at the way I speak or misunderstood my words. But these moments have also opened doors to deeper connections. Through respect and curiosity, many have embraced my background, even showing interest in learning Spanish. These experiences have taught me that our differences are strengths, not barriers.

A message to future Support Workers

For anyone considering a career in support work, especially those from Hispanic or minority backgrounds, my message is this: support work is one of the most fulfilling jobs you can pursue. However, it’s not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, resilience, and a deep commitment to others. This isn’t a role to take on solely for a paycheck, it’s a calling to make a real impact in someone’s life. While the job can be mentally and physically draining at times, the sense of accomplishment you feel when you see your client happy and achieving their goals is unmatched.

At More Than Support, we live by the values of empathy, inclusion, respect, and equality. These principles guide me every day, inspiring me to bring my best to every interaction. If you have a passion for people and a heart for making a difference, this field will welcome you with open arms, and so will we.
